Main line towards Paddington
Main line towards Paddington
The Inter City 125 unit, also known as a High Speed Train, is on the up main line, travelling towards London Paddington at upwards of 125 mph. This is Brunel's "billiard table" where the engineer built the Great Western Railway main line on very gentle gradients throughout, with broad gauge track originally.

The lines are paired, with the fast lines to the right and the slow lines to the left. This does mean that the driver of this train could be faced with trains coming towards him on both adjacent lines, a disconcerting prospect at first I would have thought.

The franchise for this area is currently held by First Group, trading as First Great Western, although there has been recent press comment that the company intends not to take up its franchise extension in 2013 in favour of the higher risk strategy of bidding for a re-let longer contract.
