SP2054 : The Gower Memorial Statue, Bancroft Gardens

taken 7 years ago, near to Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Great Britain

The Gower Memorial Statue, Bancroft Gardens.
The Gower Memorial Statue, Bancroft Gardens.
This memorial to William Shakespeare was given to the town in 1888. It is the work of Ronald Gower who spent 10 years sculpting it and also funded it from his own personal fortune.

It was originally situated on the other side of the theatre with Shakespeare facing Holy Trinity Church. That theatre was destroyed by fire in 1926 and, following construction of the new Memorial Theatre, the statue was moved to its present position in 1933.
