Floral Clock, Princes Street Gardens (2011)
The world's first floral clock was planted in 1903 at the suggestion of the Edinburgh Parks Superintendent, John McHattie. It has a circumference of 36ft and is almost 12ft wide. The hands measure almost 11ft and 5ft in length. When bearing plants they weigh approx 80lbs and 50lbs each. The original clock motor from a church turret clock in the Fife coastal village of Elie lasted until its replacement in 1936. It is hidden in the plinth of the statue of Allan Ramsay, and wound daily. The planting of the clock takes three men up to three weeks, using approximately 24,000 bedding plants. One man then takes responsibility for its upkeep for the rest of the season.
(Information from Edinburgh Council Parks Dept, 2003)

This year the clock celebrates the centenary of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID).
