The famous Iron Bridge was the first arch bridge in the world to be made out of cast iron. It was opened on New Year's Day 1781. In 1934 it was designated as an ancient monument and vehicular traffic was barred; tolls for pedestrians still were collected until 1950 LinkExternal link (Wikipedia).

The Iron Bridge is a popular tourist attraction and part of the UNESCO Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. It is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument LinkExternal link.

This view is looking across the Iron Bridge towards Ironbridge, the settlement which grew around the bridge. The hill opposite is dominated by St Luke's Church which was consecrated in 1837.
