SZ8696 : Saltmarsh, Pagham Harbour

taken 7 years ago, near to Church Norton, West Sussex, Great Britain

Saltmarsh, Pagham Harbour
Saltmarsh, Pagham Harbour
A curious feature in this part of the marsh is that - rather than the usual haphazard pattern of creeks - there are dozens of parallel runnels, more or less straight and orientated north-south, plainly of man-made origin. Part of the pattern can be seen in this image, but the overall pattern is clearer in aerial (or satellite) views. My guess is that these runnels remain as traces of reclamation work carried out circa 1876.

The grey-green saltmarsh vegetation in the foreground is predominantly Halimione portulacoides, Sea Purslane.
