SU8839 : Heathland at Kettlebury

Heathland at Kettlebury
Heathland at Kettlebury
A view which shows typical heathland vegetation, a little to the south-west of the trig. point at Kettlebury. Ground cover includes Heather (Calluna vulgaris), Bell Heather (Erica cinerea) - particularly colourful at this time of year - and gorse. In this shot the trees are mostly silver birch, though oak and Scots pine are also typical.

Kettlebury lies at the southern end of an area marked on the map as 'MANAGED ACCESS'. According to the Ministry of Defence website the area is used for infantry and logistics exercises. I have in the past seen parachute drops into the open, central area of Hankley Common. As I understand it, restrictions on public access are fairly mild - we are asked to stick to the main paths across the area, to keep away from suspicious objects, and not impede military activity.
