Queen Victoria in Morningside
What on earth was the Street Lighting Department thinking about when they positioned this lamp which obscures the view of a tablet on a tenement commemorating Queen Victoria's Jubilee? The lamps in Morningside Road are not spaced equidistantly and there is a perfectly good spot a few metres further along the same building where it could just as easily have been placed.

Morningside, which grew from a village to a city suburb in the late 19th century, became a byword for Victorian rectitude and propriety.

"Morningside...is more than a geographical expression: it is a frame of mind, a social attitude, a form of speech. (...) It might even be worth someone's trouble to investigate the fact that there are 199.5 females in Morningside to every 100 males - a concentration of femininity unique in all Scotland." -- D. Keir, Third Statistical Account, 1966
