Under the old Aust Ferry slipway
Under the old Aust Ferry slipway
It is believed that there was a crossing at this point as early as Roman times. A passenger ferry operated across the River Severn as early as the eighteenth century. In 1934 a car ferry commenced operations; it lasted until 8 September 1966, the day before the Severn Bridge was opened. It was often unable to operate, either when the tide was very low or too high. The swift currents and the often turbulent water also contributed to its problems. All that remains now of the wooden slipway are rotting timbers.
