NY8128 : Cauldron Snout from west bank

taken 7 years ago, 5 km from Langdon Beck, County Durham, Great Britain

Cauldron Snout from west bank
Cauldron Snout from west bank
Cow Green dam can be seen above. The grass area on the left has no rock outcrops and is the route of a former pre-glacial river channel of the Tees that became blocked with boulder clay dumped by the ice. When the river began to flow after the ice ages, it cut a new channel through the Whin Sill dolerite forming the Cauldron Snout waterfall. From Red Sike NY8129 : Red Sike, upstream, level with the top of the dam, down to the base of Falcon Clints NY8128 : Junction of River Tees and Maize Beck below Cauldron Snout, below the waterfall, the full thickness of the Whin Sill dolerite is about 75m.
