Detail of suspended conductors, high voltage power line
This 400 kV line crosses Brown Rig on its route south. Since the tower itself must be earthed for safety, any contact with the high voltage line is made through the long string of glass or ceramic insulator discs. The tower carries six sets of paired conductors hung from the cross-arms. The insulator is protected from damage from lightning strikes by the metal spikes and loops at the top and bottom ends, and the short rods hanging under the lines are vibration dampers to prevent the wires swinging too wildly in strong winds.
