I scored a 'hit' with the owner by identifying this sculpture as a sundial - apparently very few people do - so she was very happy for me to enter her garden and take this photograph. It is intended to represent a phoenix.
She admitted, however, that it is not oriented correctly. The gnomon (the slender bar coming back from the beak of the bird) which casts the shadow should point due north, but for aesthetic reasons it has been set up pointing very close to south! So at present, as a dial, it isn't much good (though it could be made so). As the lady said, she has a watch. I think that it was Hilaire Belloc who penned the ditty "I am a sundial, and I make a botch / Of what is done much better by a watch".
