Graeme Obree - Poetry in motion at 30 MPH
This is Graeme Obree ( LinkExternal link ), in the colours of Glasgow Wheelers Cycling Club, on the way to winning the 1991 Scottish 25 Miles Time Trial Championship in a then Scottish competition record time of 49 minutes and 48 seconds.

This was the first time that the 30mph barrier had been broken at that distance in Scotland, a remarkable feat given the wet weather conditions that day and the lack of motor traffic on the A90 course between Dundee and Perth (heavy traffic produces more drag which helps time trialists go faster).

Two years later, Obree became a household name when he smashed the world one hour record when he covered 51.596km on the Hamar track in Norway on a home made bike which included parts from an old washing machine. He broke the same record again in 1994 with 52.713km and was also World 4000m Track Pursuit Champion in 1993 and 1995.

Time trialists of that era will note the fairly standard bike design (albeit with a very short wheelbase) at a time when low profile frames and disc wheels were considered leading edge. Brake and gear cables are exposed and he is even carrying his own spare tyre, tucked under the saddle. The handlebars are upside down and back-to-front, enabling him to adopt the now famous Obree tuck position. The pedals are standard with toe clips and straps at a time when clipless pedals were fairly standard for the "serious" racing cyclist.
