SD9165 : Mastiles Lane at Gordale Beck

Mastiles Lane at Gordale Beck
Mastiles Lane at Gordale Beck
The main interest in this photo is geological, as the track does not have the expected limestone foundation, but a thinly bedded darker grey rock. This is the Silurian basement rock which is exposed in a small area around this beck crossing and is also beneath Malham Tarn. The line of the North Craven fault is only 100m or so to the left of this photo, and whilst it produces few surface features [unlike the nearby Mid Craven fault at Malham Cove etc], it does bring the basement rocks to the surface.
