NS6065 : Ladywell Street, Glasgow

Ladywell Street, Glasgow
Ladywell Street, Glasgow
The street is named after NS6065 : The Lady Well, which is visible on the right. The grassy slope to the right of the road, on the far side of the bounding wall, is part of the Glasgow Necropolis. See NS6065 : Glasgow Necropolis for a view of the wall from the other side, and LinkExternal link for the Necropolis itself.

At the time of the first-edition OS map (c.1860), the Sub-Dean Mill (shown as "Subdean Mills" on the map), would have been just a short distance ahead. It was a grain mill, and was one of several mills that once stood alongside the Molendinar Burn.

Since then, the burn has been culverted for almost all of its length (see NS6065 : The Molendinar Burn); according to the "Glasgow Encyclopedia" (1994), this was carried out in 1877. This seems a pity, given its importance in the traditional origins of Glasgow (it is thought to be the "Melingdenor" mentioned in Jocelyn's "Life of Kentigern").

For example, the nearby NS6065 : Bridge of Sighs used to cross the burn; it now leads above Wishart Street, which follows the former course of the burn: NS6065 : Wishart Street and the Bridge of Sighs.
The Lady Well
The well is thought (based on its name) to have been a holy well in the pre-Reformation era. It gives its name to Ladywell Street, in which it is located. It has been restored and rebuilt on more than one occasion.
