This is the first of many phases of the joint project between the RSPB and Hanson Aggregates. Hanson are removing sand and gravel and then reprofiling each pit to make it suitable for wetland habitats, especially reedbed (the plan is for 460ha of reedbed and another 240ha of other wetland habitat). Four years ago it was a muddy pit with isolated patches of reed, this season it had breeding Bittern and Bearded Tit. Access is still limited, this photo was taken during a volunteer work party to remove willow from the reedbed, after which the water level will be raised again.
