Glacial melt-water channel
Glacial melt-water channel
The flat fields above Pensychnant Farm owe their character to the erosion of this strange valley during the last ice age. Melt-water was impounded by ice in the Irish Sea basin and escaped parallel to the coast in elevated channels. The hard rock of the Penmaen-bach presented a significant obstacle and it has retained the features well, another example can be seen to the north of here: SH7477 : Green enclosure. Water flowing westwards formed what must have been an spectacular waterfall over the cliffs at the head of the Sychnant valley SH7477 : Rhyolite crags.
