The road runs southwards towards Capel-y-ffin in the Llanthony valley. The name Gospel Pass is said to derive from a party of 12th century Crusaders who passed this way preaching the Gospel and fund raising for a crusade, on a route that passed through Llanthony Abbey to Hay-on-Wye Castle. Though there have been religious sites in this valley since the 6th century apparently, so the name may well already have been attributed or earned well before the 12th century.
