35 years ago to the day (28th August 1976) a Lockheed C-141A Starlifter (67-0006) from the 438th MAW, US Air Force disintegrated in a severe thunderstorm on its approach to the USAF base at Mildenhall in Suffolk. The wreckage fell from the sky and covered a large area of farmland between the River Nene and a country lane called Thorney Dyke and all 14 crew and 4 passengers lost their lives. This memorial stands as an everlasting reminder of those who lost their lives in such tragic and possibly avoidable circumstances.
