A late 16th century Grade II* listed building: 'Large house. Lands originally owned by Shap Abbey, bought by Wharton family after Dissolution. Present house probably late C16 (1590 mention in Parish Register). Later additions and alterations include addition of 1st floor to rear wing in 1700 (date, with initials T. & E.D. - for Daws - on lintel of blocked 1st floor door).'
