View Indicator on the Knock
The Knock commands an exceptionally fine panorama over West Lothian. It was bought by Lieutenant-Colonel David Murdoch Sutherland JP (1873-1941) and his wife Margaret Bryson (1878-1963) and gifted to the town of Bathgate in memory of his father, Provost Donald Tulloch Sutherland (1835-1898), his mother Isabella Dawson (1831-1896) and brother Provost Robert Dawson Sutherland (1870-1926). The NS9971 : Sutherland Plaque records the gift, and the view indicator itself is inscribed 'Presented by Lt Col and Mrs D M Sutherland JP. John Mathieson FRSE FRSGS del. Charles Henshaw fecit', which being translated means that Mathieson designed and Henshaw made the indicator.
