The River Petteril at Stony Holme
The River Petteril at Stony Holme
The pink flowers are Himalayan balsam, an introduced species which is thriving along this stretch of the river. They look quite pretty but are unwelcome because the rampant growth smothers native plants, and in winter dies back leaving the banks bare and liable to erosion (information from Eden Rivers Trust LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) ) .
Stony Holme golf course is on the left, Carlisle United Football Club in the distance on the right.
