Fiddlenecks are boraginaceous plants which are native to North America, but they are arable weeds which have travelled around the world and can be found almost anywhere where there is agriculture. This specimen was one of two in a old tattie rig, the only occasion that the plant has been seen in Shetland. The plants were tentatively identified as Tarweed Fiddleneck (A. lycopsoides), but separation of the members of the genus is not easy.
