The plants in Shetland belong to the very pale subspecies septentrionalis, which is also characterised by the fact that the flowers only rarely fully open. The plant is found in sandy coastal grassland, and it has undoubtedly declined on Unst since this photo was taken, as the grazing regimes at its favoured sites have become more unsuitable.
