Cliveden, duel commemoration
Cliveden, duel commemoration
The date 1668 and a sword are picked out in stones to commemorate a duel that was fought on 21st January that year. It was between George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, and the husband of the Countess of Shrewsbury, with whom the Duke was having an affair. The Countess's husband lost, fatally, allowing the Duke to continue the dalliance, although his fall from social grace once it became known eventually led to his own downfall.
