This magnificent monument to the first Earl and Countess of Southampton in the South chapel of St Peter's church was commissioned by their son Henry Wriothesley the second Earl, under his will dated 1581. It is by Gerard Johnston a refugee from Flanders, and dates from around 1594. The Wriothesley family seat was Place House a Tudor mansion built from the alteration and remodelling of Titchfield Abbey, a property they had been granted by Henry VIII soon after the Dissolution LinkExternal link.
