Titchfield Abbey Gatehouse (Place House)
Titchfield Abbey Gatehouse (Place House)
Described by Pevsner as 'a spectacular piece of Tudor work' the shell of Titchfield Abbey Gatehouse survives virtually intact. After the Dissolution Titchfield Abbey was granted to Thomas Wriothesley 1st Earl of Southampton who set about converting parts of the medieval abbey into a Tudor mansion. The work was finally completed in 1542 when it became the Wriothesley family seat of Place House. It survived intact until the C18 but was largely demolished in 1781.
