TQ3281 : Guildhall, Gresham Street

taken 7 years ago, near to London, City of London, Great Britain

Guildhall, Gresham Street
Guildhall, Gresham Street
An interesting, if not entirely successful, juxtaposition of old and new. The building history of the complex is long and complicated, but what we see on the right are some of the early-C15th buildings behind George Dance's 1788-89 facade, with its mixture of Gothic, classical and Oriental motifs (the skyline of which was itself altered in the 1860s and the 1950s). Grade I listed.
On the left is Richard Gilbert Scott's extension of 1969-75, of concrete with bronzed bands. It is joined to the older part by a cloister with a zigzag roof supported by tapering columns. See also here: TQ3281 : Guildhall, Aldermanbury.
