Round tower on West front of abbey
When Bury St. Edmunds Abbey was taken out of use by Henry VIII much of the material was robbed for other buildings. The very solid west front of the abbey survived largely intact and in time a series of houses were built into it.

In the 1990s there was a serious suggestion of tearing out these modifications but eventually it was agreed that these were also bits of history to be preserved.

On the left we see the edge of the Great Churchyard.
