Golden Lane Estate, Goswell Road (3)
Golden Lane Estate, Goswell Road (3)
Two of the blocks of maisonettes - Basterfield House on the left and Bayer House on the right. Between them is the Bastion, a granite-clad concrete garden feature with a ramp. Grade II listed.
The estate was the first stage in the Corporation of London's plan to reverse its depopulation as a result of the war (it was built on land ravaged by bombing) - later stages would include the redevelopment of the Barbican and London Wall. The architects chosen after a competition were Chamberlin, Powell & Bon and work commenced in 1952. A total of 1,400 flats were built, mostly intended for single people and couples working in the City. There is plenty of concrete - Le Corbusier was cited as an influence - and not a lot of greenery, but the ten blocks were thoughtfully, and colourfully, designed, and the estate is generally considered to be one of the most successful of the many post-war public housing schemes. It is now listed.
The white tower beyond is the Peabody Tower.
