St Alphage House, London Wall (1)
St Alphage House, London Wall (1)
A tidy and, to me at least, inoffensive piece of 1960s curtain-walling. By Maurice Sanders Associates, 1960-62. It has green spandrels under the windows and stilts on the ground floor.
Visible in front are elevated walkways, one element of the development plan drawn up the City of London and London County Council in 1954-55. West of Moorgate, London Wall would be lined with six office towers, perpendicular to the street, and walkways would run alongside and, via a bridge, link to the Barbican Estate. The segregation of traffic and pedestrians didn't really work, and things never stay still in the City for long. A combination of the low regard with which 1960s architecture is currently held and intense pressure on land has resulted in three of the towers having already been demolished, and approval of a planning application to demolish St Alphage House and replace it with a much more intensive, and thereby profitable, development. It remains to be seen whether it will be any better or whether it will last any longer. How long before, as the ceremonial ribbon is being cut at the front, the demolition crews are moving in at the back? More information here: LinkExternal link .
