St. Mary's churchyard with Caedmon's Cross
St. Mary's churchyard with Caedmon's Cross
Overlooking Whitby is St. Mary's church with its large churchyard containing a tall cross dedicated to Caedmon, one of the earliest English poets. At the base of this richly decorated memorial is an inscription which reads "To the glory of God and in memory of Caedmon the father of English Sacred Song. Fell asleep hard by, 680".
