Stanthorne Lock west of Middlewich, Cheshire
Stanthorne Lock west of Middlewich, Cheshire
This is on the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, opened in 1833 to link the main line of the Shropshire Union Canal at Barbridge with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Middlewich.

The tail gates of the empty lock are open, and two of the crew are waiting for an approaching narrowboat to enter the chamber. Stanthorne Bridge (No 27) is a farm accommodation bridge with no public right of way across it.
