Snow monitoring study, Coire Laogh Mor 1994
Up to a few years ago little systematic data existed on snow temperatures in the British mountains, and snow temperature profiles are important in determining the potential for avalanche. As a part of a PhD project on instrumentation for avalanche forecasting and rescue, this site at 950m in Coire Laogh Mor was chosen as a suitable point for measurements over a full winter period.

The equipment measured temperatures at 10 cm vertical intervals through the snow up to a depth of 1 m. Some of the electrical thermometers can be seen on the red pole above the snow surface. Snow and air temperatures and snow depth, measured by means of an ultrasonic gauge, were recorded automatically by a battery-powered datalogger every 30 minutes, and the data sent by radio telemetry to Glenmore Lodge, in the valley about 4km away, for comparison with the Scottish Avalanche Information Service observersí measurements.

The equipment was in place for the 1993-4 and 1994-5 winters and was removed at the end of each season. A short summary of the resulting scientific paper ĎAutomated measurements of snow temperature profiles in the Cairngorm mountains, Scotlandí can be seen at LinkExternal link
