Bastion House, London Wall
Bastion House, London Wall
Part of the Museum of London complex, by Powell & Moya in 1968-76 (the museum itself TQ3281 : Museum of London is just left of shot). Pevsner comments that "its sombre bronzed curtain-walling rebukes the undistinguished materials of the earlier London Wall towers".
It stands on concrete towers above an elevated walkway, one element of the development plan drawn up the City of London and London County Council in 1954-55. West of Moorgate, London Wall would be lined with six office towers, perpendicular to the street, and walkways would run alongside and, via a bridge, link to the Barbican Estate. The segregation of traffic and pedestrians didn't really work, and things never stay still in the City for long. A combination of the low regard with which 1960s architecture is currently held and intense pressure on land has resulted in three of the towers having already been demolished, and St Alphage waiting on death row.
