Roman House, Wood Street
The first of the post-war office blocks along London Wall, built in 1957 to the designs of R.N. Wakelin of Campbell-Jones & Sons. Concrete clad in Portland stone with blue spandrels under the windows.
It was built as part of the development plan drawn up the City of London and London County Council in 1954-55. West of Moorgate, London Wall would be lined with six office towers, perpendicular to the street, and walkways would run alongside and, via a bridge, link to the Barbican Estate. The segregation of traffic and pedestrians didn't really work, and things never stay still in the City for long. A combination of the low regard with which 1960s architecture is currently held and intense pressure on land has resulted in three of the towers having already been demolished, and St Alphage (seen behind, TQ3281 : St Alphage House, London Wall (1)) waiting on death row. An inscription on the building marks the location of the first Second World War bomb to fall on the City, on 25 August 1940.
