Hairpin bend, Llansantffraed
Located opposite a church LinkExternal link at the junction of the A40 and, on the left, the road to Talybont-on-Usk. The 180-degree hairpin bend dates from 2007. Previously, the junction had the shape of an extended Y, with the western and eastern arms about 200 metres apart when they joined the A40. It was a dangerous junction, because the layout created some blind spots. After several fatal accidents here, the junction was rebuilt to give only one connecting point with the A40.
There is little scope for other types of junction layout here, because there is only a narrow (less than 50 metres) strip of land between the A40 and the River Usk.
