SC2077 : Niarbyl near the fault

taken 7 years ago, near to Dalby, Isle of Man, Great Britain

Niarbyl near the fault
Niarbyl near the fault
As viewed from the foreshore. Unbeknown to me at the time is the fact that close to this point is where North America meets Europe (in geological terms). The Niarbyl Fault is an exposed section of the Iapetus Suture as it crosses through the Irish Sea.
Not being a geologist I am indebted to Jonathan Wilkins for the following comments:-
'The locality is a place where rocks which
can be identified as Laurentian are demonstrably in contact with those
which are Avalonian (i.e. American/European). This is defined by fossil
assemblages which belong on opposite sides of the Iapetus Ocean. It is
just one such meeting place, but the suture sensu stricto is located
about 9km North, at sea today and defined by geophysical methods. Once
it would have been a huge, elevated fault zone like the Himalaya, with
slivers of rock scattered far and wide, and most particularly not a
vertical boundary as there would be multiple, sub horizontal 'thrust
faults' involved.'
