The Nevill family has owned land at Birling since the Manor came into the family by marriage in 1435. Since then the family has given England many famous sons, including Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick, who became known as Warwick the Kingmaker when his nephew won the War of the Roses and became Edward IV. The Manor built by the Hon Reverend William Nevill in the late 1830s and burned down in 1917. A branch of the family still lives at Birling Place to the north of the village. The Bull pub changed its name to the Nevill Bull in 1953 in memory of Michael Nevill who was killed in WWII.
