Sir William Petty monument - Romsey Abbey
Sir William Petty monument - Romsey Abbey
This memorial effigy was commissioned by Sir William Petty's family some 200 years after his death which occurred in 1687. He was born in Romsey and was an extremely talented individual who became renowned as an anatomist, cartographer, founder member of the Royal Society, inventor, educationalist and friend of Pepys. He came to prominence first under Cromwell during the Commonwealth when he served in Ireland after that country's suppression, where he developed efficient means of distributing confiscated lands to reward Cromwell's soldiers.
