This view reveals the buildings current use as a Buddhist Centre. The symbols on the proscenium arch are on a board which protects the vignette of Queen Victoria dating from the 1926 reopening.
Cambridge Festival Theatre
Situated in Newmarket Road, this is reputed to be one of only 4 pre-Victorian theatres still in existence. Designed by William Wilkins, it first opened in 1814 and was sited outside the ancient city boundaries to avoid university displeasure. It was originally known as the Barnwell Theatre.

By 1878 its fortunes had declined, and it was purchased by Robert Sayle for the use of the Evangelisation Society as a Mission Hall. It returned to theatrical use in 1926 as the Festival Theatre and operated until 1939, reviving during the war to stage shows for the troops. After the war it was used as a store by the Arts Theatre, who also staged occasional performances here up to 1997.

In 1998 it was bought by the Windhorse Trust to be a new Cambridge Buddhist Centre.
