The old B5288 east of Penruddock
This narrow lane was at one time part of the B5288 between Penruddock and Penrith, but is now a cul-de-sac, used as a public footpath and giving farmers access to their fields. The nearby cat's eye on the right shows that, as a B road, it was wider than it is now.

A quick glance at the map might lead you to think that this lane formed part of the A66 before it was upgraded in the early 1970s. But road numbering is not so simple. The A66 between Penruddock and Penrith follows roughly the route of what was then the B5288. That was a route from here to Penrith, but not the main one, which was the A594 via Greystoke. The A66 itself did not then come west of the A6 in Penrith. Just to confuse matters more, the A594 was then downgraded and renumbered as the B5288.
