Old Sarum, view
Old Sarum, view
Looking across the outer ditch towards Salisbury, with the cathedral spire in the distance. The composition is perhaps not as interesting, nor the cloud formations as stunning, as a watercolour of a similar view by JMW Turner, painted in 1828-9; sheep and bucolic characters have gone, perhaps to be replaced by rugby players, and the painting might have been made from the line of shrubs further down Castle Hill: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
