Next to a feature shown on OS as "Gun End of Base"; the monument reads "In 1794 a line from this site to Beacon Hill was measured by Capt W Mudge of the Ordnance Survey as a base for the triangulation of Great Britain // Presented by Master Masons 1967". The feature referred to can be seen just to the right of the second fence post, and is apparently a buried gun barrel, on which Mudge's men presumably erected their theodolite.
