Bodiam Castle's interior buildings
The ruins seen today are (from left to right) the lord and lady's apartment rooms featuring many fireplaces and window seats, the great hall, with its long window, for communal dining and the domestic rooms of the castle such as the buttery, pantry and great kitchen with its fireplaces and bread ovens, (and with a chapel being out of shot to the far left). 'Comfortable grandeur' is how the National Trust describe the residential accommodation. Here a knight's lady could live as mistress of all she surveys, awaiting her husbands occasional presence on his return from conflicts in the Hundred Year's War and managing her household, staff and family.
