The Fleur de Lys pub (recently renamed The Snug after a period of closure, although fortunately retaining some of its original signage). The frontage is 18th century but the building itself, originally a private house, dates back to at least the 14th century.
Tradition has it that it was used to house King John of France following his capture at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356. This is now considered unlikely, but presumably is connected one way or other with the pub name and the name of the road in which it stands (French Row), which runs behind the Clock Tower. However, an alternative tradition is that the name of the road derives from the quartering of French troops there in 1271.
