Doonanore Castle on the NW of Cape Clear Island is a four storey O'Driscoll tower that was surrendered to Crown forces in 1602 after a short siege. A suggestion that piracy was undertaken from here by the castle's occupants could be translated as them simply '...overseeing the movement of goods through Roaringwater Bay as well as charging passing vessels for anchorage, victualing and exploitation of the waters.' Due to its exposed position on the edge of a cliff on a partially collapsed promontory, subject to the onslaught of frequent Atlantic storms and high winds, its long term survival is unlikely.
