St Mary's Church, Beverley
St Mary's Church, Beverley
Founded in 1120, the original Norman church was planned on a large scale; the plinths of the external buttresses of the Normal church may be seen at the entrance to St Katherine’s Chapel. The only other visible remains of the Norman building are the interior arch of the door to the South Porch, and the zigzag ornament over the arcade to the North Transept.
In the second quarter of the 13th century, the nave was built with aisles, and the chancel was extended to its present length.
St Mary’s owes its great architectural interest of having been developed through 400 years of almost continuous building from about 1120 to 1530.
The West front is a fine example of late fourteenth century work reminiscent of that of the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, which was built more than half a century later.
The main tower fell in 1520 during a service causing serious loss of life (92 parishioners killed) There was also extensive damage to the nave which was rebuilt within 4 years.
St.Mary's church
Beverley is blessed with two magnificent churches, the larger Minster is foremost, but St. Mary's is close behind and one of the best parish churches in England. Founded in 1120, reputedly by Thurstan, Archbishop of York 1114-1143 who had been Provost of Beverley Minster.
Many of the medieval guilds adopted St. Mary's and their generous endowments paid for the largely 14th and 15th century wonder we see today.
