The lakes are situated on a high point between the northern ends of the Sirhowy and Ebbw valleys.
They were originally used as feeders for the former Ebbw Vale steelworks.
The upper two lakes are managed by the Ebbw Vale Welfare Angling Club for permit fishing.
The lower and smaller of the three lakes is a wildlife area and contains the only known breeding site on South Wales of the Brown Hawker dragonfly.
