'Arrival of Mary Queen of Scots' detail
'Arrival of Mary Queen of Scots' detail
Detail of a painting by William Hole in the Edinburgh City Chambers. The Protestant reformer John Knox observes Mary carefully as she processes from the Castle to Holyroodhouse, accompanied by her half-brother James Stewart, 1st earl of Moray and James Douglas, 4th earl of Morton (behind her, left and right). In the background a salute can be seen being fired from the Castle's Half Moon Battery - quite remarkable really, as it wasn't built until after 1573, during Morton's regency, some six years after Mary's abdication and imprisonment.
