Wetheral Priory Gatehouse
Wetheral Priory Gatehouse
Dating from the early 15th century, this is the only building that survives intact from a small Benedictine Priory established at Wetheral in 1106. After the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII the gatehouse was used as a vicarage for a couple of centuries, and then as a hayloft.
The gatehouse is now in the care of English Heritage - their website gives historical information and a description of the building LinkExternal link .
